Storing hoses

The way hoses are stored affects the way they are rolled out and used.

1. Flaked hose
Hose folded back and forth in a zigzag pattern. Hoses stored like this can have several lengths pulled out quickly.

Delivery and feeder hoses are stored this way. Flaked delivery hoses are stored joined together.

.

Flaked 41-mm hoses can be stored in forestry packs for easy carrying.

Flaked hoses can also be carried by a firefighter over the shoulder or around the neck as a bandolier. This is commonly used for highrise firefighting.

2. Hose on the coil
Hose that is rolled up with the female coupling at the centre and the male coupling on the outside.

Hoses stored like this are easy to carry and fast to roll out.

All types of hose can be stored this way, but there are other ways to store hose.

3. Hose on the bight
Hose that is folded at the centre and laid back on itself before being rolled up into a coil. The couplings are both on the outside.

Hoses stored like this can be quickly ‘bowled’ out in a single length, and both couplings can be easily accessed.

Typically forestry hose will be stored on the bight when on station. Other hoses are not usually stored this way.
